MOSCOW, November 14. /TASS/. Researchers from the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) have discovered a previously unknown tomb, more than 4,000 years old, near the famous pyramids in Egypt, TASS has learned.
"A Russian expedition from the Institute of Oriental Studies at the RAS, led by Doctor of Philosophy in History Eleonora Kormysheva, has found a unique, previously unknown rock tomb and has begun exploring it. The discovered tomb is located in the eastern sector of the Giza pyramid complex, 300 meters from the Great Pyramid," the institute said in a statement.
According to the statement, so far, a small hole has been cleared, through which one can see the remains of a wooden, painted sarcophagus, intact ceramic vessels—typically used for supplies the deceased would need in the afterlife—and other items lying in the burial chamber. The archaeologists are now preparing to open the burial chamber.
"The tomb dates back to the era of the Old Kingdom, when the Fifth Dynasty of ancient Egyptian pharaohs reigned. On the walls, there are inscriptions and reliefs depicting the owner of the tomb sitting with his wife in front of a sacrificial table, as well as their statues carved into the rock," Kormysheva was quoted as saying in the statement.
