Production of e-vehicles in Russia to soar in 2023 — First Deputy PM

This year it is planned to increase the production of electric vehicles by 9 times, which is up to about 18,000 units per year, Andrey Belousov said

MOSCOW, February 9. /TASS/. The production of electric vehicles in Russia in 2023 is expected to soar by a factor of 9 in 2023 up to 18,000 units per year, an official with the office of First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Andrey Belousov told reporters on Thursday.

"In 2022, about 2,000 electric vehicles were produced in Russia. There is a trend to increase the production of electric vehicles. This year it is planned to increase the production of electric vehicles by 9 times, which is up to about 18,000 units per year, and in 2024 - to 36,000 units a year," Belousov said, as quoted by his office.

"The development of electric transport is a trend in the development of the global automotive industry," the First Deputy Prime Minister noted. He recalled that the Russian government came up with a three-stage strategy for the development of electric transport.

The implementation of the first stage started last year with the development of relevant infrastructure.

"It involves [installation of] fast-charging stations, as well as the creation of a regulatory base that allow comfortable use of road transport, primarily for the consumer, reduce risks and maintain profitability for manufacturers," Belousov said. Last year, 439 fast charging stations in 12 pilot regions were installed, he added.

"This year, there are already 34 pilot regions that will receive subsidies for the commissioning of fast-charging stations. By 2024, the number of charging stations in Russia should be about 3,000," the First Deputy Prime Minister specified.

The second stage involves an increase in demand and an increase in production load. The third stage is the development of domestic production of e-vehicles.

In turn, Deputy Minister of Economic Development Maxim Kolesnikov said that in November and December 2022 alone, weekly sales of electric vehicles in Russia exceeded 180 units. In 2021, on average 25 electric vehicles were registered per week.

"To date, 24,500 electric vehicles have already been registered in Russia. As for the charging infrastructure, more than 7,500 chargers are already operating in Russia and 35 operators of power-generating units are involved," Kolesnikov added.
