Borei-class subs to be mainstay of Russia’s seaborne strategic nuclear forces — commander

Meanwhile, multi-purpose ships and submarines of five-six Projects, basically, the carriers of long-range precision weapons, including hypersonic missiles, will lay the basis for the Fleet’s general-purpose seaborne forces

SEVEROMORSK, June 1. /TASS/. Borei-class nuclear-powered missile-carrying submarine cruisers will become the mainstay of Russia’s seaborne strategic nuclear forces in the coming decades, Northern Fleet Commander Admiral Alexander Moiseyev said on Wednesday.

"Under the concept and the plan of developing the Navy through 2033 and also within the framework of the Treaty between the Russian Federation and the United States of America ‘On Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms,’ Borei subs are set to constitute the basis of seaborne strategic nuclear forces in the next 30-40 years," the commander said.

Currently, these forces comprise seven strategic submarines: Project 667BDRM Delfin nuclear-powered submarine cruisers and Project 955/955A (Borei/Borei-A) subs, the admiral specified.

Meanwhile, multi-purpose ships and submarines of five-six Projects, basically, the carriers of long-range precision weapons, including hypersonic missiles, will lay the basis for the Fleet’s general-purpose seaborne forces, he said.

"The submarine forces will be based on Project 885M (Yasen-M), 636.3 and 677 submarines while surface combatants will comprise Project 22350 first-rank frigates similar to the Admiral Gorshkov," the commander said.

Today these forces integrate three large formations and one detachment (the 43rd missile ship division). They are accomplishing the tasks of operational service and combat patrols to defend and protect the state border underwater and in the air within the area of the Fleet’s responsibility.
