BERLIN, March 18. /TASS/. The government of Germany intends to nominate Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Alliance 90/The Greens) for president of the UN General Assembly for 2025-2026, the DPA agency reported citing sources in the cabinet.

Baerbock will continue to serve as foreign minister of the country until Germany establishes a new government. The new cabinet of ministers will be announced on April 20. The Greens are not engaged in coalition talks, so they are unlikely to become a part of it.

The General Assembly is expected to elect Baerbock as its president in June. She will take office in September. The DPA said that her election is considered a formality. Upon taking office, Baerbock will resign from her mandate in the Bundestag. She plans to present her campaign platform in New York in May.

The German government believes that this candidacy will underscore Germany’s strong commitment to the United Nations’ principles.
