BERLIN, December 16. /TASS/. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has asked President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to dissolve the Bundestag (parliament) after the failure of the vote of confidence, the DPA news agency reports citing government sources.

Earlier on Monday, most German MPs at an extraordinary session refused to vote for a motion of confidence in Scholz, thus paving the way for early parliamentary elections. Support for the current head of the Cabinet was expressed by 207 members of the Bundestag out of the 717 present, while 116 abstained. The motion of confidence submitted by Scholz was dismissed by 394 legislators.

As the NTV channel reported, after the session Scholz immediately went to the Bellevue Palace, the Berlin residence of the German president, to ask him to disband the Bundestag.
