UNITED NATIONS, November 8. /TASS/. The United Nations has neither the funds nor the power to prevent a potential genocide in the Gaza Strip, but a solution to the crisis might be found on the UN platform, Secretary General Antonio Guterres said at a conference in New York organized by Reuters.
"[We have] no power, no money, but a voice and a platform where people can [bring] together governments, civil society, businesses, and at least try to find ways to address the dramatic problems of our time," Guterres said when asked what levers the UN had at its disposal to stop a potential genocide in the Gaza Strip.
Earlier, Libya’s Permanent Representative to the UN Taher El-Sonni said at a UN Security Council meeting that without taking action and holding those responsible for the Gaza crisis accountable, the international community may see a genocide rivaling Rwanda in the 1990s.
Tensions flared up in the Middle East after Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip attacked Israeli territory on October 7. Hamas views its attack as a response to Israeli authorities’ steps against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Israel declared a total blockade of the Gaza Strip and launched bombardments of the enclave and some areas in Lebanon and Syria. Clashes are also reported in the West Bank.
