Geneva Discussions co-chairs to visit Abkhazia to discuss agenda of next round of talks

The previous, 56th, GID round of talks took place on October 4-5 after a lengthy break caused by Russia’s special military operation

SUKHUM, November 9. /TASS/. The co-chairs of the Geneva International Discussions (GID) on security and stability in the South Caucasus are expected to arrive in Sukhum on Wednesday to discuss the agenda of the upcoming 57th round of talks, the Abkhazian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"A delegation of the co-chairs of the Geneva International Discussions (GID) on security and stability in the South Caucasus - Toivo Klaar (EU), Cihan Sultanoglu (UN) and Viorel Mosanu (OSCE) - is arriving in Abkhazia today. The meeting with Abkhazia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Iraklii Tuzhba is scheduled to touch upon the agenda of the next round of International Discussions, the date of which has not been determined yet," the statement said.

The previous, 56th, GID round of talks took place on October 4-5 after a lengthy break caused by Russia’s special military operation. During the negotiations, Georgia declined to discuss the topic of the agreement on international assurances of the non-use of force. Abkhazia voiced concern over Georgia’s ongoing military and technical buildup with the direct support of the US and other NATO members, over the NATO-led joint military exercises on Georgian territory, and reiterated its interest in resuming the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) in the city of Gal.

The International Discussions on security and stability in the South Caucasus, involving Abkhazia, Russia, Georgia, South Ossetia and the United States and brokered by special representatives from the UN, the EU and the OSCE, have been held in Geneva since 2008. The work is traditionally carried out by two working groups - on security and humanitarian issues. The Geneva International Discussions remain the only platform for dialogue between Sukhum, Tskhinval and Tbilisi.
