Russia urges restraint amid escalation of Israel-Iran tensions — Kremlin

"It is extremely important today for everyone to show restraint in order to avoid a complete destabilization of the situation in the region, which already does not shine with stability and predictability," Dmitry Peskov noted

MOSCOW, April 11. /TASS/. Russia calls on all countries in the Middle East region to show restraint in the wake of the deadly Israeli strike carried out on the Iranian consulate office in Syria so as to avoid a full-scale destabilization of the situation, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.

"We undoubtedly urge all countries in the region to show restraint," he told journalists. "You all know well that we have condemned the strikes against the Iranian consulate office. We have expressed our resolute condemnation regarding the delivered strikes. They violated all the principles of international law."

"It is extremely important today for everyone to show restraint in order to avoid a complete destabilization of the situation in the region, which already does not shine with stability and predictability," Peskov added.

Israeli strike on Damascus

On April 1, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Public Relations Department reported the death of seven Iranian military advisers in a strike by the Israeli air force on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital. Two IRGC generals, Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, and five officers were killed in the strike. According to Iran’s IRIB TV channel, Zahedi was in charge of Iran’s Al-Quds special forces in Lebanon and Syria. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that Tehran would make Israel repent for the strike, while President Ebrahim Raisi vowed that the attack would not go unanswered.

Israel has so far made no statements on responsibility for the airstrike. However, Israel Defense Forces Spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari told CNN that, according to the Israeli military’s data, the strike was not targeting Iran’s consulate but rather an IRGC military facility, which he claimed had only been disguised as a civilian building.
