Russia has no illusions regarding US midterm election — MFA

Maria Zakharova noted that the midterm congressional elections confirmed that the United States was seriously divided

MOSCOW, November 9. /TASS/. Russia does not expect anything from the results of the US Congressional midterm elections against the backdrop of US politicians’ Russophobia, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a news briefing on Wednesday.

"We had no expectations or illusions about the Republicans and the Democrats changing places on Capitol Hill. In the context of a strong Russophobic consensus, it is unfortunately impossible to count on the slightest trace of common sense from the US elite, regardless of party affiliation, when it comes to relations with Russia," she said. "Nevertheless, we have never said that we are slamming the door shut. We stay open to a dialogue. Diplomacy prevails. We will be open to normal work, when and if Washington realizes the futility of putting pressure on Moscow and getting ever deeper into the conflict in Ukraine as a party to it."

Zakharova noted that the midterm congressional elections confirmed that the United States was seriously divided. "The archaic electoral system does not guarantee the legitimacy of the electoral process. Voters do not trust the results. They regard them as heavily rigged," the official said.
