Kremlin refrains from revealing reasons for situation around Jewish Agency

"We cannot make any comments during the court trial," Dmitry Peskov said

MOSCOW, July 29. /TASS/. Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov has refrained from revealing the reasons for initiating a lawsuit demanding the shutdown of the Jewish Agency for Israel (Sochnut) in Russia.

"Judicial proceeding is underway. That is why we cannot comment anything now. We simply have no right to do it," he told journalists on Friday when asked what kind of violations of Russian laws were the reason for the lawsuit against Sochnut.

When asked whether the Kremlin had requested information about this case, Peskov noted, "We do have certain information." "But we cannot make any comments during the court trial," he repeated.

Moscow’s Basmanny district court told TASS on July 21 that the Russian justice ministry demanded the Sochnut agency enjoying the status of an autonomous non-profit organization be wound up.

Sochnut is an Israel-based international organization specializing in repatriation of Jews and assistance to returnees.
