RIO DE JANEIRO, May 23. /TASS/. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has called on US President Donald Trump to convene the permanent members of the UN Security Council at the White House to discuss a reform of the organization and its institutions.
"The world needs a properly functioning [UN] Security Council. And I’ve already spoken to five [members of the UN Security Council] about this. They should meet at the White House as soon as possible. That’s what I told Trump: ‘Listen, you have to call them to this meeting’," the head of the South American republic said in an interview with TV Brasil.
A reform of the UN Security Council and the entire organization is long overdue, the Brazilian leader noted. "Brazil should be a member of the Security Council, Germany, Japan, Nigeria with a population of 240 million, Ethiopia with a population of 126 million, as well as India, South Africa, and Mexico. The fact is that modern geopolitics is not the same as it was in 1945," he concluded.
