YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, March 17. /TASS/. Magnitude 3 earth tremors were felt in the Kuril Islands after the powerful earthquake that rocked northeastern Japan on Thursday, a spokesman for the Sakhalin office of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Geophysical Service told TASS.
"A magnitude 7.4 quake hit the eastern coast of the Honshu Island. Magnitude 3 earth tremors were felt in the settlement of Malokurilskoye on the Kuril Island of Shikotan," the spokesman said, adding that no tsunami warming was issued for the Kuril Islands’ Pacific coasts.
A 7.3 magnitude earthquake jolted northeastern Japan in the small hours on Thursday. The epicenter was located off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture at the depth of about 60 km under the ocean floor. A tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake. Waves up to 20cm high reached the coasts of the Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures. Japanese seismologists warn about possible strong aftershock within a week. According to NHK television channel, two people died and 126 were hurt.
