Concreting of turbine generator foundations completed at Akkuyu nuclear plant

The operation was carried out continuously for more than 24 hours

MOSCOW, November 6. /TASS/. The concreting of the turbine generator foundation for Power Unit No. 4 at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) being constructed by the Rosatom State Corporation in Turkey has been completed, the press service of Akkuyu Nuclear company said.

In preparation for the concreting process, specialists installed 308 metric tons of reinforcement bars, 69 metric tons of embedded parts, and set up the anchoring equipment for securing the turbine unit. The operation itself was carried out continuously for more than 24 hours. During this time, workers poured 2,241 cubic meters of concrete mix using nine concrete pumps.

"For the project team, this is already the fourth turbine generator foundation at the Akkuyu NPP. The reliability of the turbine generator is established right at the construction stage of its foundation. The structure should withstand not only the weight of the turbine and generator but also the loads generated by their operation. Special spring units reduce the transmission of vibrations to the turbine hall structures. The foundation will ensure the reliable operation of the equipment, which is set to generate electricity for Turkey for decades. Therefore, in the turbine hall, just like at other NPP facilities, the quality requirements for every element are determined with the entire operational lifespan of the power units in mind," said Sergey Butskikh, CEO of Akkuyu Nuclear.

Following the completion of the concreting process, the foundation will cure to reach its design strength, which will take about 60 days. The specialists will dismantle the formwork and inspect the structure then. The quality of the work will be verified by a commission including specialists from the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Turkey (NDK) and an independent inspection organization. Following the results of these checks, installation of the turbine generator components will begin.
