Russian fishermen catch record number of iwashi sardines in 2024

Efficiency has increased owing to the fishing fleet revamp, head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries Ilya Shestakov noted

MOSCOW, December 2. /TASS/. Russian fishermen reeled in a record number of iwashi, also known as the Pacific sardine, in 2024, with the catch in total being above 563,500 metric tons, head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries Ilya Shestakov told TASS.

"Russian fishermen set the record of iwashi sardine catch. The catch is above 563,500 metric tons (48,400 metric tons more than in the like period of the last year). The absolute record throughout the post-Soviet period was established," the official said.

Efficiency has increased owing to the fishing fleet revamp, Shestakov noted. "Furthermore, quality of products increased - freshly caught fish is processed right on board," he stressed.

The iwashi catch continues and results will be summarized in 2025, the official added.
