Trump’s envoy calls return of Russian flag, anthem to Paralympians meaningful step

Paolo Zampolli is optimistic that continued progress can create a credible route toward fuller Russian participation at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028

WASHINGTON, October 15. /TASS/. The return of the Russian flag and anthem to Russian Paralympians at the Olympic Games in Italy was a "meaningful step," US Special Envoy for Global Partnerships Paolo Zampolli said in an interview with TASS.

"I have consistently supported the principle that athletes should not become permanent substitutes for political negotiations. The return of the Russian flag and anthem for Paralympians in Italy was a meaningful step, and I welcomed it. I am optimistic that continued progress can create a credible route toward fuller Russian participation at Los Angeles 2028," said the diplomat who works both in the White House and the US State Department.

The six Russian Paralympians competed in Italy under their national flag and anthem, winning eight gold, one silver and three bronze medals to finish third in the overall standings. The 14th Winter Paralympic Games were held in Italy from March 6 to 15, 2026.
