Almost half of Moldova’s lawmakers back Sandu’s impeachment

CHISINAU, September 29. /TASS/. Moldova’s parliamentary opposition has launched impeachment proceedings against President Maia Sandu, accusing her of usurping power, undermining sovereignty and violating citizens’ fundamental freedoms, representatives of opposition factions said at a briefing.

"Forty-six members of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova have signed a draft resolution to launch impeachment proceedings against the president," Ion Chicu, leader of the Party of Development and Consolidation of Moldova and a former prime minister, said.

According to him, the draft resolution has been registered with parliament and should be considered urgently. The opposition plans to notify embassies and international organizations about the initiative.

Under the country’s Constitution, a proposal to remove the president from office may be put forward by at least one-third of lawmakers, while two-thirds, or 67 votes, are required to remove the president from office. The ruling Party of Action and Solidarity, founded by Sandu, controls 55 of the 101 seats.
