Strikes on NPPs, surrounding areas unacceptable — IAEA on Bushehr NPP attack

The IAEA added that it had no information about any increase in radiation levels following the incident

VIENNA, April 4. /TASS/. Strikes on nuclear power plant (NPP) sites and adjacent areas are unacceptable as they may contain equipment critical to nuclear safety, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said, commenting on the latest attack on Iran’s Bushehr NPP.

"IAEA DG (Director General - TASS) Rafael Grossi expresses deep concern about the reported incident and says NPP sites or nearby areas must never be attacked, noting that auxiliary site buildings may contain vital safety equipment," the agency wrote on X. The IAEA added that it had no information about any increase in radiation levels following the incident.

The United States and Israel launched a military operation against Iran on February 28. Major Iranian cities, including Tehran, were struck. The White House justified the attack by citing alleged missile and nuclear threats from Iran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced a retaliatory operation, targeting sites in Israel. US military bases in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE were also hit. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and some other key Iranian leaders were killed in the joint US-Israeli attack.
