US uses AI to identify targets in preparation for operation against Iran — WP

The US military used the Maven Smart System platform

WASHINGTON, March 5. /TASS/. The US military used the Maven Smart System digital air traffic control platform, based on the Claude artificial intelligence (AI) model, to select targets in planning the operation against Iran, The Washington Post (WP) reported, citing sources.

According to the sources, in preparation for the operation, the US used the platform to identify "hundreds" of targets and their precise coordinates, as well as to compile lists of these targets in order of priority. Thanks to AI, the US struck a thousand targets in the first 24 hours of its attack on Iran.

The AI tools also evaluate a strike after it is initiated. One of the newspaper's sources noted that AI allowed the military to increase the pace of combat operations. The newspaper recalled that last week, the Washington administration deemed Anthropic, the company that developed Claude, a threat to national security and banned all US federal agencies, including the Pentagon, from using its technology. However, according to the newspaper's sources, the US military intends to use it until an alternative is found. An Anthropic representative declined to comment.

The Pentagon previously worked closely with Anthropic and used its Claude AI model. The company refused to comply with the department's demands to lift some restrictions on Claude's use. The Pentagon is seeking permission from its AI companies to use their technologies for all legitimate purposes, which it defines as military operations and intelligence gathering. Anthropic refused these conditions.

The United States and Israel launched a large-scale military operation against Iran on February 28. Major Iranian cities, including Tehran, were struck. The White House justified the attack by citing alleged missile and nuclear threats from Iran. At the same time, US leadership openly called on the Iranian population to rise up against their government and seize power. As a result of the strikes, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and several other senior figures in the leadership of the Islamic Republic were killed. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced a retaliatory operation, targeting sites in Israel. US military bases in Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia were also hit.
