US Gaza resolution falls short on Palestinian rights — Chinese diplomat

The project of the resolution, presented by the US, does not sufficiently reflect such important principles as the 'two states for two peoples', in accordance with which the Palestinians govern their state, Mao Ning said

BEIJING, November 18. /TASS/. US’ UN Security Council resolution on Gaza does not sufficiently address the "two-state" solution and does not fully take into account the Palestinians’ right to self-determination, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Mao Ning said.

"The project of the resolution, presented by the US, <…> does not sufficiently reflect such important principles as the ‘two states for two peoples’ [peace settlement], in accordance with which the Palestinians govern their state," she told reporters. "This runs counter to China’s consistent position. That is why we abstained and did not support it [the resolution]," the diplomat emphasized.

According to the spokeswoman, the UN resolution "remains unclear" regarding key issues, such as Gaza’s fate after the conclusion of the armed conflict. Mao Ning pointed out that Beijing would take a constructive and responsible position on this issue, "supporting the Palestinian people's just fight to restore their lawful rights," as well as taking all possible steps to reach "a comprehensive, just, and sustainable settlement."

"I would like to stress that China supports the Security Council in adopting all possible measures to contribute to a sustainable ceasefire, alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe, and begin [Gaza's] post-war reconstruction," Mao Ning noted.

Earlier, the UN Security Council adopted the US resolution, which includes provisions on the support of international stabilization forces to ensure a peaceful future for Palestinians in Gaza without the radical Palestinian movement Hamas. Thirteen of the 15 UN Security Council members voted for the document, while Russia and China abstained.
