MOSCOW, February 4. /TASS/. Indonesia’s accession to BRICS as a full-fledged member will open up new opportunities for countries of the global South, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko said.
"Cooperation within the Russia-ASEAN strategic partnership is a major factor od stability and security in the Asia Pacific region. Indonesia’s joining BRICS opens new opportunities for joint work in the interests of countries of the global South," he said in a statement that was read out by Lyudmila Vorobyova, director of the Russian foreign ministry’s third Asia department, at a gala reception on the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Indonesia.
"Indonesia has always been and continues to be Russia’s reliable partner in the Asia Pacific region. Being guided by the traditions of friendship and mutual respect, the two countries are developing their trust-based top and high-level political dialogue, intensifying trade and economic cooperation, and expanding humanitarian exchanges," Rudenko noted. "Sharing a common understanding of global and regional processes, Moscow and Jakarta actively cooperate within the United Nations and other multilateral organizations."
In turn, Indonesian Ambassador to Russia, Jose Antonio Morato Tavares hailed the decades-long successful development of bilateral relations. "Our cooperation is developing in many areas: politics, economy, culture, and the social sphere," he emphasized. "We are committed to the course towards strengthening relations between our countries on the basis of equality, mutual respect and benefit."
On January 6, the Foreign Ministry of Brazil, which took over the rotating presidency of BRICS on January 1, 2025, announced that Indonesia had joined the group as a full member.
