MEXICO, January 22. /TASS/. Colombian police seized more than eight metric tons of cocaine in what was one of the largest-ever drug busts in the country's history, Colombian President Gustavo Petro said.

"The national police have seized 8.2 metric tons of cocaine at the port of Buenaventura (in the department of Valle del Cauca - TASS}," Petro wrote on the X social network.

In his words, it was among the largest hauls in the country's history. Including today, Colombian police have seized 24 metric tons of cocaine this month alone, the president added.

The UN Office for Drugs and Crime said in October 2024 that the area of coca plantations in Colombia grew by 10% in 2023, reaching a record 625,000 acres. UN experts estimate the country’s potential cocaine production at 2,664 metric tons.
