New Syrian authorities announce intention to build free economy in country

Armed opposition units in Syria launched a large-scale offensive against government troops in late November

BEIRUT, December 18. /TASS/. The new Syrian authorities have set the task of building a free economy in the country, Minister of Economy and Resources in the interim government, Basel Abdul Aziz, stated.

"We intend to transition from a socialist economy <…> to a free and competitive economy that will benefit everyone," he was quoted as saying by the Syrian newspaper Al Watan. The new authorities expect the private sector, as well as Syrian businessmen currently abroad, to contribute to increasing the country's economic development, the minister noted.

Armed opposition units in Syria launched a large-scale offensive against government troops in late November. On December 8, they entered Damascus, and President Bashar Assad stepped down and fled the country. On December 10, Mohammed al-Bashir, who had led the so-called Syrian Salvation Government in the Idlib governorate, announced his appointment as head of Syria’s interim government, stating that the transitional period would last until March 1, 2025.
