Syria’s interim cabinet to focus on preventing collapse of statehood — PM

"We are face with big challenges but our previous experience of governing the Idlib governorate and adjacent territories has furnished us with vast expertise," Mohammed al-Bashir noted

RABAT, December 10. /TASS/. Syria’s interim government will focus on issues of security control, stability of state institutions and efforts to avert the collapse of the statehood, Mohammed al-Bashir, head of the interim cabinet, said.

"The interim government will be tasked to control security, maintain the stability of state institutions and prevent the state from collapsing," the SANA news agency quoted him as saying.

Among other priorities of the interim government, he cited "providing Syrians with basic services until a new government meeting the interests of the Syrian people is formed." "Our people deserve living a decent life and receiving the best services of the highest quality," he pledged.

"We are face with big challenges but our previous experience of governing the Idlib governorate and adjacent territories has furnished us with vast expertise," he noted.

Earlier in the day, al-Bashir announced his appointment as head of the Syrian interim government. Since January 2024, he has been heading, the Syria Salvation Government, an opposition cabinet in the opposition-controlled territories in the Idlib governorate.

Syria’s armed opposition units launched a large-scale offensive on government troops in the Aleppo and Idlib governorates in late November. On December 8, they entered Damascus while government troops withdrew from the city. The head of the Syrian government, Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali, expressed his readiness for a peaceful transfer of power in the country.
