AfG leader urges Berlin to avoid entanglement in Ukraine conflict

Alice Weidel pointed out that Germany is involved in "an economic war against Russia," sending weapons to Kiev and providing substantial financial aid to Ukrainian authorities

BERLIN, March 20. /TASS/. The co-chair of the Alternative for Germany (AfG) party, Alice Weidel, has accused the German government of making the country a party to the conflict in Ukraine.

"It is not enough to [say] 'No' to Taurus [long-range cruise missiles’ deliveries]. In fact, Germany is behaving as a warring party," she said addressing the Bundestag.

Weidel pointed out that Germany is involved in "an economic war against Russia," sending weapons to Kiev and providing substantial financial aid to Ukrainian authorities.

"Instead of accelerating the escalation by stoking bellicose hysteria and sending weapons, German politics should go back to doing what it does best. That is, doing its best to act <…> as a mediator and kick-starting the negotiation process," Weidel said.

The AfG co-chair backed Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s refusal to send the Taurus cruise missiles to Kiev. She believes that the deliveries of such weapons "would inevitably lead to German troops getting involved in servicing [the missiles] and thus would dramatically increase the potential for escalation."

Moreover, Weidel believes that the missiles would not have reversed the situation on the front.

"Even having the Taurus [missiles], Ukraine would not have the slightest chance of accomplishing its military objectives," she said.

Scholz has repeatedly reiterated his stance that Taurus missiles should not be sent to Ukraine. He argued that German soldiers are needed to effectively use such missiles, and that is a red line he is unwilling to cross. Scholz has been facing relentless criticism from other politicians, especially those from the opposition bloc of Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU).
