Protesters wrap up rally in Belgrade, plan to reconvene on Tuesday

BELGRADE, December 26. /TASS/. Supporters of the Serbia Against Violence opposition alliance have wrapped up the rally outside the Belgrade police headquarters, according to a TASS reporter at the scene.

Protest organizers announced the rally will reconvene near the Republican Election Commission on Tuesday.

The rally near the Serbian capital's police headquarters began after lawmaker Srdjan Milivojevic urged protesters to find out what happened to opposition supporters that had been detained the day before during unrest in front of the Belgrade administration building. The organizers of the protest said that they plan to send a request to the Interior Ministry for the release of the detainees.

On Sunday, Serbia Against Violence members tried to storm into the building of the city administration. The demonstrators used flagpoles to tear down the door and smash the windows, then started to hurl stones and beer cans into the openings. They also destroyed CCTV cameras. The police dispersed the protesters by midnight. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that the opposition's protests and their provocative statements would have no result, as the only way to change the government is by elections. He said no matter what the protesters do, they will not be able to overthrow the government. Serbian opposition is disputing the victory of the ruling party-led alliance in the election to Belgrade city council.
