Hungary opposes Ukraine joining NATO as it poses war risk for entire alliance, Orban says

According to Viktor Orban, entering into an alliance with a country that is actively engaged in a military conflict with another country is not in Hungary’s interests

BUDAPEST, December 21. /TASS/. Hungary stands against Kiev’s ambition to join NATO because Ukraine’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance could result in all members of the bloc being dragged into the military conflict now raging on Ukrainian territory, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban told a press conference.

"Ukraine’s membership in NATO means that we would be obligated to deploy our troops there the very next morning. And we don’t want that," the head of the Hungarian government said.

Orban asserted that he considered state sovereignty, that is, the ability to make independent decisions, important in terms of membership in the European Union and NATO, but does not want Hungary to be dragged into a war against its own national interest. According to him, entering into an alliance with a country that is actively engaged in a military conflict with another country is not in Hungary’s interests.

Earlier, the Hungarian prime minister repeatedly said that inviting Ukraine to become a member of the 31-member North Atlantic Treaty Organization would necessarily give rise to the threat of a third world war.
