Trial of politician charged with treason begins in Estonia

Attorney Mati Senkel called the charges against Aivo Peterson utopian and said they had no legal precedent

VILNIUS, November 7. /TASS/. The trial to determine whether Koos/Together movement’s leader Aivo Peterson is guilty of treason has begun in Estonia's Harju County Court, ERR state radio reported.

According to the prosecution, Peterson and Dmitry Rootsi "systematically aided Russia and persons working under orders from Russian agencies in nonviolent action against the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Estonia based on guidance received from the Russian Federation."

The prosecution believes that, with Andrey Andronov's participation, they tried to create a political association whose activities would threaten the constitutional order of Estonia, interfere in the internal politics of the country and potentially have an impact on its foreign policy.

Attorney Mati Senkel called the charges against Peterson, Rootsy and Andronov utopian and said they had no legal precedent.

Peterson traveled to Donetsk in February 2023. He said the purpose of the visit was to put together an unbiased picture of what’s going on in Donbass. He then took part in a Russian television show hosted by Vladimir Solovyov. He was detained for a few hours as he crossed the border from Russia into Estonia on March 6.
