EU will have to talk to Russia again once conflict in Ukraine is over, Saxony PM says

Michael Kretschmer emphasized that Russia will remain a EU’s neighbor even after the conflict is over

BERLIN, November 5. /TASS/. Prime Minister of Germany’s Free State of Saxony Michael Kretschmer (CDU) called for prompt resolution of the conflict in Ukraine via diplomacy, noting that, once the conflict is over, Russia will remain a EU’s neighbor, which will have to maintain relations with Moscow, including economic ones.

"The sooner cannons become silent, the better," he said, during a CDU convention in Schkeuditz. "War does not end at a battlefield, it always ends at a negotiation table," the Prime Minister said.

He emphasized that Russia will remain a EU’s neighbor even after the conflict is over. According to the official, to be in denial is not a solution.

"When this war is over, we will have to once again talk to each other, trade with each other," Kretschmer said.

At the same time, he agreed with the position of the federal government that it is necessary to provide comprehensive support to Ukraine. However, he pointed out that a discussion should also be possible.

"Especially when we talk about a war or peace, there must be an option to openly and honestly discuss different positions with each other," he concluded.

Earlier, the Prime Minister of Saxony repeatedly called to "freeze the conflict," which he was harshly criticized for.
