Iraqi parliament says country wants to strengthen ties with Russia

The Council of Representatives (Iraqi unicameral parliament) calls for strengthening relations with Russia, deputy speaker of the republic’s legislative body Shahwan Abdallah said on Wednesday at a meeting in Baghdad with Russian Ambassador Elbrus Kutrashev, Shafaq News portal reported.

"They discussed the latest developments in the Iraqi political arena and the prospects for cooperation between Baghdad and Moscow," the newspaper quotes the statement of the deputy speaker's press service.

According to the deputy, the Iraqi legislature gives priority to "activating the work of parliamentary friendship committees between Iraq and Russia." "Russia is a large and important state," Abdallah noted, "The desire to develop bilateral ties between our friendly peoples is mutual."

The Russian diplomat, according to the communique, "reaffirmed his country's commitment to support Iraq in overcoming the crisis and removing obstacles to stability and development.".
