Syrian Constitutional Committee discusses cementing principles of combating terrorism

The opposition co-chairman of the committee noted that this is the first time the discussions actually involved the draft Syrian Constitution

GENEVA, October 21. /TASS/. The Small Body of the Syrian Constitutional Committee is discussing cementing the principles of fighting terrorism and extremism in the basic law of the republic, opposition co-chairman of the committee Hadi al-Bahra told TASS Thursday.

"At this point, we are discussing constitutional principles about combating terrorism and extremism," he said.

According to al-Bahra, in the previous several days, the sides discussed the principles of the supremacy of law and the position of the Army and security services after the constitutional reform.

"In the first day, [we discussed] the sovereignty of the state," al-Bahra said.

He noted that this is the first time the discussions actually involved the draft Syrian Constitution.

"Previously, there were general discussions, so now we’ve started the stage of drafting. Hopefully, we are trying to reach an agreement on mutual consensus on these principles soon. The sooner we will conclude this, the more successful will be our mission," he said.

The sixth round of discussions on Syrian constitutional reform kicked off in Geneva on October 18. The session of the Small Body, which includes 45 experts, is expected to last at least until the end of this week.
