EP resolution on Russian elections is an attempt to influence Moscow’s policies — envoy

When asked if the EU can decline to recognize the elections in Russia, Vladimir Chizhov recalled that the resolution represents a recommendation, while it is up to EU member states to make such a decision

MOSCOW, September 16. /TASS/. The recommendation of members of the European Parliament to potentially reject the outcome of the upcoming Russian elections is an attempt to yield influence over Russian policies, Moscow’s envoy to the EU Vladimir Chizhov said.

"They are not even trying to disguise this attempt at all," he noted. "There cannot be two opinions because they are themselves openly writing this. It does not only say there how bad the current authorities are in Russia but also how the authorities should look so that MEPs will like it as well as that it should follow Brussels’ instructions and that it is needed to change the Russian electoral legislation without delays and expand the opposition’s participation."

When asked if the EU can decline to recognize the elections in Russia, Chizhov recalled that the resolution represents a recommendation, while it is up to EU member states to make such a decision. "I would not overestimate the significance of this paperwork by MEPs," he concluded.
