Abkhazia’s parliament approves appeal for president to step down

Nineteen out of 27 parliamentarians attending the session voted in favor of this decision

SUKHUM, January 9./TASS/. At an extraordinary session on Thursday, the parliament of Abkhazia passed an appeal to President Raul Khajimba urging him to step down to stabilize the situation in the country, TASS reports from the site.

Nineteen out of 27 parliamentarians attending the session voted in favor of this decision. The decision was passed "because of a tense social and political situation in the republic and in order to avoid further destabilization in the society, which may trigger uncontrollable processes and irreparable consequences, as well as with an aim to preserve national accord and stability in the state," the resolution said.

"The People’s Assembly rules to appeal to the President of the Republic of Abkhazia to tender his resignation," it said.

Now, the parliament is waiting for the president’s moves, parliamentarian Ilya Gunia told TASS. "Now, we are waiting for the president’s moves. We have no impeachment procedure, that is why we are waiting for the president’s decision in order not to bring people against each other, in order to avoid disastrous consequences," he said.
