MOSCOW, February 21. /TASS/. Russian tennis star Andrey Rublev beat France’s Richard Gasquet in the second round of the 2024 Qatar Open to advance to the round of eight.
Rublev (the top seed at the tournament) prevailed 6-3, 6-4 over French wildcard Gasquet. In the quarterfinals, Rublev will face Czech player Jakub Mensik.
In other matches on Wednesday, Karen Khachanov defeated Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan 6-4, 7-5, while Pavel Kotov lost to France’s Ugo Humbert 4-6, 1-6. Next up for Khachanov will be a matchup with Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori.
Rublev, 26, is currently ranked 5th in the ATP World Rankings and has 15 ATP tournament titles to his name. He has also appeared in numerous Grand Slam tournaments, albeit never advancing beyond the quarterfinals. Rublev took home the gold at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo in mixed doubles (with teammate Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova) and also won the 2021 Davis Cup as part of the Russian national team.
The 2024 Qatar Open Tennis tournament is a WTA-ranked 1000 competition on the organization’s calendar and it takes place at the International Tennis and Squash complex in Doha, Qatar, between February 11 and 17. The tournament is played on outdoor hard courts and offers over $3.21 million in prize money.
