Women's Tennis Association names Russian Mirra Andreeva Rookie of the Year

MOSCOW, December 11. /TASS/. Russia's Mirra Andreeva has been recognized as the best rookie of 2023 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), the WTA press service reports.

Andreeva started the year ranked number 405 in the world but finished the year at number 57, the biggest jump by any female tennis player.

During the season, the Russian was ranked as high as 46th. In 2023, the 16-year-old reached the third round at the French Open, the fourth round at Wimbledon and the second round at the US Open. She also reached the final of the junior Australian Open. Apart from Andreeva, Russians Diana Schneider and Elina Avanesyan, American Peyton Stearns and Czech Linda Noskova were also up for the award.

World number one Iga Swiatek was named the top female tennis player of the year. The Polish athlete won six tournaments, including the French Open and the WTA Tour Finals. Hunter Storm (Australia) and Elise Mertens (Belgium) were recognized as the best doubles team of the year. China's Zheng Qinwen was named most improved tennis player, while Ukraine's Elina Svitolina was honored as Comeback Player of the Year.

Russia's Vera Zvonareva and Germany's Laura Siegemund were among the nominees for the best doubles squad of the year award and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was nominated for the Comeback Player of the Year Award.
