Russia to release its first AI historical film in 2026

The creators are currently obtaining a distribution license and holding talks with several streaming platforms to organize the premiere

NOVOSIBIRSK, July 28. /TASS/. Russia has for the first time created a popular science documentary film entirely using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, which tells the story of Commander Mikhail Kutuzov and is set to debut in 2026, Konstantin Kuznetsov, the film's screenwriter and director, announced at the TASS press center.

"It is the first film that we made with AI. In Russia, at least, it definitely is. <...> This is our modest attempt to revive interest in history once again," he said, noting that more than 50 classic paintings come alive in the film.

The duration of the film is 40 minutes, according to Kuznetsov. The creators are currently obtaining a distribution license and holding talks with several streaming platforms to organize the premiere. They plan the film’s release in the summer or autumn of 2026. The main difficulty is that authorities have never allowed fully AI-generated films into theaters before, the director noted.

To ensure a highly authentic depiction of historical realities, the authors cooperated with the M.I. Kutuzov Foundation during production.
