Number of homeless people in US up to record 770,000

WASHINGTON, December 28. /TASS/. The number of homeless people in the United States has surged to the highest level ever, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development said in a report.

In January 2024, 771,480 people in the country were experiencing homelessness on a single night, which is an 18% increase in annual terms, according to the report. To compare, in January 2023 the number of homeless people in the US exceeded 650,000.

This year the number of homeless in families with children increased by 39% to 259,473 people, according to the document.

The surge in homelessness came amid a shortage of affordable housing, inflation, as well as a stagnating salary growth, the publication said. Moreover, the healthcare crisis and natural disasters affected the situation.
