HELSINKI, December 3. /TASS/. Two instances of damage have been identified to cables belonging to the Global Connect company in Finland, one in the city of Espoo, and the other in Vihti, where an excavator damaged the cable during earthmoving, security service director of Elisa mobile operator Jaakko Wallenius told the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper.
He said the damage was an accident, not an act of sabotage, and that the problem was fixed on Tuesday morning. "Unfortunately, these kinds of things happen," Wallenius said. Meanwhile, he refused to comment on the cable damage in Espoo.
The Helsingin Sanomat newspaper reported earlier that a telecommunication cable between Sweden and Finland was damaged last night. The cable was on Finnish soil. Finnish police suspect that it was an intentional act and are working with Swedish authorities to find the cause, the news outlet noted.
Two cables were damaged in the Baltic Sea on November 17-18. One of them links Germany and Finland and the other one runs between Sweden and Lithuania. The damage was rectified late last week.
