Russia’s Kasatkina through to semifinals of WTA tournament in Charleston

In the semifinals, Daria Kasatkina will play against second seed Ons Jabeur from Tunisia

MOSCOW, April 8. /TASS/. Russia’s tennis player Daria Kasatkina has made it to the semifinals of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tournament in Charleston, South Carolina, USA.

In a quarterfinal match, which ended on Saturday night, Russia’s seed-3 defeated her American opponent Madison Keys (9th-seed) with the final score of 6:7 (5:7), 6:4, 6:2.

In the semifinals, Kasatkina will play against second seed Ons Jabeur from Tunisia, who reached the semifinals after Russian Anna Kalinskaya refused to continue the quarterfinal match.

In the other quarterfinal match, Russian Ekaterina Aleksandrova lost to fourth-seeded Swiss Belinda Bencic with a score of 3:6, 3:6.

In semifinals Bencic will meet the winner of the match between Jessica Pegula of the US and Spain’s Paula Badosa.

Russia’s 25-year-old Kasatkina is the winner of six WTA (the Women Tennis Association) tournaments and she is currently rated as the World No 8 in in the WTA Rankings. Kasatkina’s best result playing at the Grand Slam tournaments was reaching the semifinal rounds of the 2022 French Open.

Keys, who is 28 years old, ranks 22nd in the WTA rankings, she won six tournaments under the auspices of the organization. In 2017, the American lost in the final of the US Open to compatriot Sloane Stephens.

The tournament in Charleston belongs to the WTA 500 category, the prize fund is over $780,000. The current winner is Swiss Belinda Bencic. In 2021, Russian Veronika Kudermetova won the tournament, Kasatkina was the winner in 2017.
