Russia, China have similar positions on Korean settlement — top official

The two countries are categorically against expanding the number of nuclear powers

BEIJING, September 9. /TASS/. Russia and China have identical positions on the settlement of the situation in the Korean Peninsula, speaker of Russia’s Federation Council upper parliament house Valentina Matviyenko said on Friday.

"Russia’s and China’s positions on that matter completely coincide. We are categorically against expanding the number of nuclear powers. We are categorically against violation of all United Nations resolutions adopted concerning this situation," she told journalists.

"We have always stood and are standing for diplomatic talks with North Korea on the violation of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, on the violation of United Nations resolutions to have them implemented," she added.

North Korea conducted its fifth nuclear test on Friday. According to South Korea’s ministry of national defense, it was the most powerful missile ever tested by Pyongyang. The four previous nuclear tests were conducted by North Korea in 2006, in 2009, in 2013 and in January 2016.
