AI already being used for cyberattacks — CIS counterterrorism chief

According to Yevgeny Sysoev, state systems for detecting, preventing and mitigating the consequences of computer attacks in CIS countries have now switched to proactive defense using machine learning

SAMARKAND, November 6. /TASS/. Artificial intelligence is already being used to carry out large-scale cyberattacks, Colonel General Yevgeny Sysoev, head of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Anti-Terrorism Center (ATC), said at the first SCO Plus Expert Dialogue on Security Issues.

"Cyberspace has seen a shift from manual hacking attacks to the use of self-learning botnets. Artificial intelligence is used to continuously scan the digital perimeters of facilities in the energy, transport, financial and public administration sectors, instantly exploit so-called zero-day vulnerabilities and create polymorphic malicious code that is invisible to traditional antivirus software," Sysoev said.

According to him, state systems for detecting, preventing and mitigating the consequences of computer attacks in CIS countries have now switched to proactive defense using machine learning, "intercepting sophisticated attacks on critical information infrastructure facilities before they penetrate the control environment."

As part of efforts to build a "layered system for countering" new digital threats, CIS countries "are carrying out a planned transition, at the infrastructure and legislative levels, of all critical infrastructure entities to domestic software and electronic components, eliminating the risk of facilities being remotely shut down from abroad."
