Russia welcomes African countries’ plans to open embassies in Moscow — top diplomat

Sergey Lavrov stressed that broader Russian diplomatic presence on the continent helped to strengthen strategic cooperation with Africa

MOSCOW, May 25. /TASS/. Russia welcomes plans of some African countries to open their embassies in Moscow and will assist this effort in every possible way, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said during a gala reception on Africa Day.

"We welcome certain African countries’ plans to open their embassies in Moscow and will assist them in every possible way," the top Russian diplomat said.

He went on to say that broader Russian diplomatic presence on the continent also helps to strengthen strategic cooperation with Africa.

"Last year, our embassies in Niger, Sierra Leone and South Sudan began their work," he said. "Diplomatic missions in Gambia, Liberia, Togo and the Union of the Comoros are about to open."
