Strike near Bushehr NPP hits protection perimeter — Rosatom CEO

Developments around the Bushehr NPP are unfolding under the worst-case scenario, and the conflict continues to escalate, Alexey Likhachev noted

YEKATERINBURG, April 4. /TASS/. A strike near the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant effectively hit the facility’s physical protection perimeter, with the first death recorded among the plant’s security personnel, an Iranian citizen, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev said during a working visit to Yekaterinburg.

"At 07:20 a.m. Moscow time today (4:20 a.m. GMT - TASS), a strike was carried out effectively within the plant’s physical protection perimeter. The first fatality has been recorded, apparently a member of the plant’s security service, an Iranian citizen," Likhachev told reporters.

Developments around the Bushehr NPP are unfolding under the worst-case scenario, and the conflict continues to escalate, Likhachev noted. The likelihood of a nuclear incident is increasing, and it could lead to a regional catastrophe with long-term consequences, he warned.

On Saturday, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) reported that a projectile had hit an area near the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, killing one of the facility’s security guards. The main installations were not damaged. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) emphasized that strikes on NPP sites and adjacent areas are unacceptable as they contain equipment critical to nuclear safety.
