Guterres’ statement on Crimea, Donbass indicate UN crisis — Zaporozhye Region politician

Anton Bibarov-Gosudarev also emphasized that the referendums in Crimea, Donbass, and Novorossiya represent unprecedented expressions of popular will

MELITOPOL, January 29. /TASS/. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ remarks on Donbass and Crimea demonstrate a crisis within the UN, Chairman of the Civic Chamber of the Zaporozhye Region Anton Bibarov-Gosudarev told TASS.

Earlier, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, responding to a question from TASS, said that the UN secretariat had concluded that the right of peoples to self-determination was inapplicable in the situation with Crimea and Donbass.

"As unfortunate as it is, such a UN judgment is unlikely to interest the residents of the regions reunited with Russia. Unfortunately, the United Nations, and particularly the secretary general, has never once clearly expressed a position on the majority of international agenda issues. Double, even triple standards are now being promoted not only by the collective West. They can often be heard from top UN officials. Today we see a crisis within the United Nations itself. Therefore, we proceed from national interests, and opinions of this kind do not concern us," Bibarov-Gosudarev said.

He also emphasized that the referendums in Crimea, Donbass, and Novorossiya represent unprecedented expressions of popular will. According to Bibarov-Gosudarev, current developments in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, the Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions, as well as Crimea and Sevastopol, confirm the correctness of the choice made by the population.

"The people have made their decision and do not regret it. Today, we can see the regions truly transforming. Opinions of Antonio Guterres or anyone else are of no interest to the residents," he said.
