Russia, China oppose US attempts to destroy security architecture in Asia Pacific — Lavrov

"All this does not suit the US and its allies, so they are promoting their bloc-based approaches here, particularly emphasizing the need for the North Atlantic Alliance to enter the region," the top Russian diplomat noted

BEIJING, April 9. /TASS/. Moscow and Beijing are against the US creating exclusive political and military alliances in the Asia-Pacific region and oppose attempts to undermine regional security, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference in Beijing following talks with top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi.

"We have talked a lot about the need to ensure security and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, where the US continues to pursue a policy of private military and political alliances with limited membership that are clearly directed against China and Russia and, among other things, seek to destroy the security architecture that has developed around the Association of Southeast Asian Nations over the past decades on the platforms that the association offered to its partners based on inclusivity, consensus, mutual respect and avoidance of unilateral actions," the top Russian diplomat pointed out.

"All this does not suit the US and its allies, so they are promoting their bloc-based approaches here, particularly emphasizing the need for the North Atlantic Alliance to enter the region," Lavrov noted.

"In a wider context, we exchanged opinions on the prospects for creating a new security architecture in Eurasia as Euro-Atlantic mechanisms continue to decay and destroy themselves," the Russian foreign minister said.

As for the situation around Taiwan, he stressed that Moscow shared Beijing's "rejection of any outside interference," because Taiwan was an integral part of China and the issue was the country's internal affair. Also, when discussing the situation on the Korean Peninsula, the parties confirmed their mutual interest in maintaining peace and stability in the region, Lavrov added.
