Tehran grateful for Russian position on attack on Iran’s Damascus consulate — envoy

Kazem Jalali also stated that the strike on Iran’s diplomatic facility in Damascus was carried out "in breach of all international norms and laws"

MOSCOW, April 2. /TASS/. Tehran is grateful to the Russian government for the statement it issued following Israel’s strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attack on the Iranian consular office in Syria, stressing that "Israel’s aggressive actions are absolutely unacceptable and must come to an end."

"We are grateful to the Russian government for issuing a statement on the terrorist attack right after the strikes," the envoy said at a meeting with Grigory Krasnov, head of the Russian Federation Council (upper house of parliament) Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Jalali also stated that the strike on Iran’s diplomatic facility in Damascus was carried out "in breach of all international norms and laws." "We will need to see how the international community reacts to these steps," the Iranian ambassador added.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on April 1 that the Israeli Air Force had carried out a strike on a building in the Syrian capital of Damascus. Iranian media outlets said that the country’s consulate had come under attack. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement that the strike had killed seven military advisors, including General Mohammad Reza Zahedi and General Mohammad Hadi Haji-Rahimi. According to Iran’s government-run IRIB TV channel, Zahedi commanded the units of the IRGC Al-Quds Force in Lebanon and Syria.

Russia resolutely condemned the Israeli strike and requested a UN Security Council meeting on the issue. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi vowed that the attack on the country’s consulate would not go unanswered. An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson declined a request from TASS to comment on reports about the Israeli strike on Damascus.
