The BRICS association comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa is not a military bloc but creates conditions for achieving mutual understanding, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum - Forum of United Cultures on Friday.

The admission of new members to the BRICS association is an example of "how a compromise can and need to be sought and achieved without imposing any viewpoint," the Russian leader pointed out.

"These are the organizational principles of BRICS, which is not a bloc, all the more so, it is not a military bloc but it creates conditions for achieving mutual understanding," Putin said.
