The BRICS association comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa is not a military bloc but creates conditions for achieving mutual understanding, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum - Forum of United Cultures on Friday.

The admission of new members to the BRICS association is an example of "how a compromise can and need to be sought and achieved without imposing any viewpoint," the Russian leader pointed out.

"These are the organizational principles of BRICS, which is not a bloc, all the more so, it is not a military bloc but it creates conditions for achieving mutual understanding," Putin said.

"This is the pathway to go along and this is how we will work, in particular, within the framework of BRICS whose chair will pass over to us from January next year," the Russian president stressed.
