Russian citizen Suvorov extradited to US to be placed in custody — document

The court ordered that the defendant be "afforded a reasonable opportunity for private consultation with Defense Counsel"

NEW YORK, October 17. /TASS/. Russian citizen Alexander Suvorov, who was extradited to the United States from Sweden, will be placed in custody during the trial, according to the documents from the court of the Northern District of New York, which TASS has reviewed.

"On October 16th, 2026, an Initial Appearance was held. Through counsel, Defendant voluntarily waived his right to a detention hearing. In announcing that waiver, Defendant’s counsel advised that he had explained the nature of the detention hearing to the Defendant. Defendant reserved his right to request a detention hearing at a later time," the documents said.

The court ordered that the defendant be placed in custody in a corrections facility and "afforded a reasonable opportunity for private consultation with Defense Counsel."

Earlier, the US Department of Justice said that 52·year·old Suvorov was extradited on October 15. He is charged with three counts of illegal export of microelectronic components from the United States to Russia via a Hong Kong-based company. The Russian is expected to appear in court on October 16 in Albany, New York. If convicted, he could face up to 45 years in prison and a fine of up to $1.75 million.

The Russian Consulate General in New York has not yet received an official notification from the American side about Suvorov's extradition and is planning a consular visit to Albany after receiving it, an official of the diplomatic mission told TASS.
