Over 500,000 people in DPR remain without water, heating following Ukrainian shelling

DONETSK, April 12. /TASS/. More than 500,000 people remain without water and heating due to the destruction of infrastructure facilities by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the Emergencies Ministry of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Over 500,000 people remain without drinking water, hot food, heating and gas, as well as without access to fixed telephone lines, mobile services and the Internet. While retreating, the Ukrainian military partially destroyed homes, social infrastructure facilities and bridges on local roads connecting settlements," the statement reads.

According to the ministry, the DPR authorities are carrying out emergency repair work in settlements located in the Telmanovsky, Novoazovsky, Starobeshevsky, Pervomaisky and Yasinovatovsky districts, as well as in the cities of Mariupol and Volnovakha, which were previously controlled by Kiev.

Tensions escalated along the line of contact in Donbass on February 17. The Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics reported the heaviest shelling by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in months. On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the recognition of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. On February 24, Putin announced a special military operation based on a request from the heads of the Donbass republics. The Russian leader stressed that Moscow had no plans to occupy Ukrainian territories and the goal was to demilitarize and denazify the country.
