PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, November 20. /TASS/. Kamchatka’s authorities believe there are undiscovered gold deposits in the peninsula, encouraging surveys to be carried out so that the economy can reap the benefits, the governor of Russia’s easternmost region Vladimir Solodov told TASS.
"Speaking about subsoil management in general, this is objectively one of the drivers of the region’s economy. At the same time, my position is to limit both geological exploration and mining in places adjacent to key tourist locations. This particularly concerns gold mining projects. In the peninsula, in non-tourist places, the mining of gold ore continues; there are prospects for new exploration," he said.
Gold mining in Kamchatka soared by 47% in 2023 compared with 2022. Several large mining companies operate in the region. Moreover, silver, coal and natural gas are produced in the peninsula.
