ALMATY, April 2. /TASS/. An oil spill with the area of about seven square kilometers was found near the Kashagan oilfield in the Caspian Sea, executive director of Globus center of environmental and legal initiative Galina Chernova said, citing monitoring data of the Sentinel-1A satellite.
"According to space monitoring data, an oil spill was found on March 30 of this year in the area of the Kashagan Field in the Caspian Sea," Chernova said on Facebook (prohibited in Russia due to its ownership by Meta, which has been designated as extremist). "The spill area is about seven square kilometers; the spot drifted to the north of the Caspian Sea," she added.
An accidental or an emergency oil leak during production or "an emergency situation occurring with support vessels that allowed such spill" could be the cause, the environmentalist said.
The press service of the Energy Ministry of Kazakhstan said that the ministry would make a statement on this topic in the near time.
